So I'm going on a run, trotting down the street when our friendly neighborhood dogs do their thing and come out to bark at me. Usually I'm walking, pushing Elizabeth in the stroller, but I wanted to get out and run since it's been awhile. The loud dog, who I'm not afraid of, is chasing me and barking. Nothing out of the ordinary. But this time he gets too close, lunges at me from behind and chomps my calf. It doesn't hurt that bad and it's only punctured the skin in one spot followed by a little tearing. When I go to talk with the owner she apoligizes and says she didn't know the dogs were out. Then I tell her they're ALWAYS out, I can count on them being out. She replies she'll try to keep them in the back but they get out. How, I ask. Through the front door. So they come in the back door, through the house, out the front door, bark loudly at passers-by and she doesn't know? Hmmm. She is apologetic, though. I tell her I'm just glad it wasn't my kid who was bit.
She closes the door and the neighbor, who has seen it all, asks about rabies. Back I go to her house to confirm the dog is up-to-date. She's no longer willing to open up.
Now it's swollen around the bite, but cleaned up. Now what?

I'd call and report it especially if those dogs are always out. If she is that unaware that her dogs are getting out through the FRONT door she may be lax enough to not be up to date on their shots. Is that how you spell lax? And those dogs should NOT be able to get out if they are the kind that will lunge at and bite a stranger jogging by.
I agree with Sarah. You really need to find out if the dog's rabies vaccine is up to date. That's not a disease you want to mess around with. She may ignore you at the door - she can't ignore Animal Control.
I'm with both Sarah and Laura. I hope all goes well. So sorry this happened to you.
Ug. That's such a hard one. I agree that you need to make sure the dog has had his rabies vaccine. But, If you call animal control the dog may be put down. That would probably make the lady hate you forever, but it could save someone else (your kid, another kid) a bite or worse. Good luck, and I hope your bite is better soon!
I agree with everyone else. Did you ever find out about his rabies status? How does the bite look now? I've had a similar experience where a dog bit my child, the neighbor hated me forever, but I did call animal control because she wouldn't tell me if the dog had his shots. It turned out that he did, so I'm not sure why she wouldn't tell me!!
